What Is Co-Citation and Co-Occurrence in SEO?

Co-citation is when two different sites are cited by the same third page without linking to each other. Co-occurrence is when your brand name and a topic keyword appear near each other in text, with no link at all. Both are association signals โ€” they describe how search engines infer what you're related to, not how authority is passed.

Neither is a confirmed Google ranking factor, and both are routinely oversold. They are still worth understanding, because the thing they describe โ€” being named in the same breath as the leaders in your category โ€” has become far more consequential in the AI-search era than it ever was for classic rankings.

Co-citation, defined

Say an industry blog publishes "the three tools we use for link research" and links to Ahrefs, Majestic and you. None of those three sites link to each other. But one document has now placed all three in the same set. Do that across hundreds of documents and a pattern forms: these entities belong to the same category.

That's co-citation, and the idea is older than search engines. It comes from bibliometrics โ€” Henry Small's 1973 paper Co-citation in the scientific literature proposed measuring the relationship between two academic papers by how often a third paper cites both. Papers frequently co-cited turn out to be topically related, even when neither references the other. The web version of this is the same measurement over hyperlinks instead of footnotes.

Co-occurrence, defined

Co-occurrence drops the link entirely. It's the observation that your brand name and a phrase keep appearing near each other in text โ€” "Backlinkster" and "link exchange", say โ€” across many independent documents.

No link, no citation, just textual proximity at scale. This is closer to how language models build associations than to how PageRank works, which is a large part of why the concept has had a second life.

The difference in one table

Co-citation Co-occurrence
What's being measured Two entities linked or cited by the same third page A brand and a keyword appearing near each other in text
Does a link have to exist? Yes โ€” from the third page to both No
What it suggests These two things are in the same category This thing is about that topic
Closest offline analogue Two books on the same reading list Two words that keep turning up in the same sentence
Overlaps with Category roundups, "best of" lists, comparison posts Unlinked brand mentions, press coverage, forum threads

Both are distinct from an unlinked mention of your brand on its own, which does a different job โ€” do brand mentions without a link help SEO covers that one directly.

What the evidence actually supports

This is where most articles on the topic go wrong, so it's worth being blunt about the three tiers of claim.

Well established. Search engines parse the text around a link, not just the anchor string. Google's own guidance asks publishers to write link text and surrounding context that describes the destination โ€” which only makes sense if the surrounding context is read. That is the mechanism co-occurrence describes, and it is not controversial.

Reasonable inference. Google maintains an entity graph, and entities have relationships โ€” competitor-of, category-member, made-by. Documents that name several entities together are an obvious input to building those relationships. You can watch this working in the "People also search for" carousel and in Knowledge Panel related-entity rows.

Not established. That co-citation is a ranking factor you can dial up. Google has never described one, no independent study has isolated it from the confounding variables (sites that get co-cited also get links, traffic and mentions), and the SEO-blog claim that "co-citation replaced anchor text" โ€” which circulated hard around 2012โ€“2014 โ€” was never supported by anything more than correlation.

Treat co-citation and co-occurrence as descriptions of how association is inferred, not as levers with a documented effect size. That framing keeps you doing the right work for the right reason.

Why it matters more now than it did in 2014

Large language models are, at their core, machines for learning which things co-occur. When someone asks an assistant "what are the best link exchange platforms", the model isn't running a link graph โ€” it's drawing on which names appear together with that phrase across everything it has read, then checking a handful of live sources.

That makes co-occurrence the entry ticket to the consideration set. If your brand has never appeared beside the category phrase in text the model has seen, you are not a candidate answer, however good your page is. This is the practical version of the point made in do backlinks help you get cited by ChatGPT: being talked about alongside your category is a separate job from being linked.

How to actually build it

You can't "do co-citation" directly. You can put yourself in the documents where it happens.

Get into comparison and "best of" lists. These are pure co-citation machines: one page, several entities, one category. Pitching a genuine differentiator to a writer already maintaining such a list is the highest-yield version of this work.

Get into recurring roundups. Curated weekly and monthly link digests place you beside whoever else was picked that week โ€” see what is a link roundup and how do I get into one.

Be in the same directories and marketplaces as your peers. Category listings are co-citation by construction. Are business directory listings worth it covers which ones still earn the effort.

Answer questions where your category is being discussed. Forum and community threads that compare options are dense in exactly this pattern, and they're heavily represented in what AI systems retrieve.

Write the comparison yourself. A page where you name competitors honestly is a page that co-cites you with them, under your own control. Should I link to my competitors covers when that's the right call.

Keep earning real links alongside it. Association tells search engines what you're about; links are still what tells them you matter. Backlinkster handles the second half โ€” 1-for-1 in-content swaps with relevant site owners, verified live by code, with five a month on the free tier. See how it works.

Frequently asked questions

What is co-citation in SEO? Co-citation is when two websites are linked or mentioned by the same third page without linking to each other. Repeated across many pages, it signals to search engines that the two sites belong to the same category or topic, the same way frequently co-cited academic papers turn out to be related.

What is the difference between co-citation and co-occurrence? Co-citation requires a link or citation from a third page to both entities. Co-occurrence requires no link at all โ€” it's simply your brand name and a keyword appearing near each other in text across many documents. Co-citation is about links; co-occurrence is about language.

Is co-citation a Google ranking factor? Google has never confirmed one, and no independent study has isolated its effect from the links, traffic and mentions that accompany it. Treat it as a description of how topical association is inferred, not a lever with a known effect size.

Did co-citation replace anchor text? No. That claim circulated widely around 2012โ€“2014 after the Penguin updates devalued exact-match anchors, but anchor text remains a documented signal. Both matter; neither replaced the other. See what is anchor text.

How do I build co-occurrence for my brand? Get named in the places where your category is discussed: comparison posts, roundups, directories, review sites and community threads. There is no way to build it directly โ€” it is a by-product of being mentioned repeatedly beside the phrase you want to own.

Does co-occurrence help with AI search visibility? It's close to a precondition. Language models learn which names go with which topics from co-occurrence in text, so a brand that has never appeared alongside its category phrase is unlikely to surface as a candidate answer, regardless of how well its own pages are written.

The bottom line

Co-citation and co-occurrence are the vocabulary for a simple idea: search systems work out what you are partly from the company you keep. Nobody outside Google can tell you what either is worth as a ranking input, and anyone who quotes you a number is guessing. What is defensible is the work itself โ€” getting named in the roundups, comparisons, directories and threads where your category is discussed. That was decent SEO advice in 2014. It's closer to essential now that the systems answering people's questions were built by reading which names appear together.
